Re: The Handy Guide to Shadowrun
In Essence, Shadowrun is a Cyperpunk-fantasy Randian dystopia. Randian, as in Ayn Rand. As in taking her idea of selfish individuality to its logical (or illogical) extreme, and add magic, fantasy creatures and evil spirits.
Corporations have gotten the rights to become something akin to self-governing bodies, but only if they're big, and rich enough. People are wage slaves to the corporations, and the same corporations often employ small armies for the task of security. Rights? What are rights? There are no rights here. You work fifteen to twenty hours a day, get one day off, and like it. You make your nuyen, use them to buy food, drink and entertainment. Then you go back to work, so you won't starve. After all, you don't want to be one of those living out in the wastes, right? The gangers, and gutterpunks. The SIN-less, who are lower than low, and worthless... Except for those with the right skills.
On the fringes of society, live the desperate, the starving, the SIN-less. The Shadowrunners. Considered expendable, but perfect for the work that the corps and crime lords don't want to dirty their hands with.
This is the world of Shadowrun. And you play a Shadowrunner. A skilled individual who uses their mind, magic, body, robots, or weapons to get by in the shadows cast by the Megacorporations. How you got here? Well there's all kinds of ways. Some were born here. Some had a fall from grace. Some are criminals. And some chose to leave the light for the shadows. However you got here, it's doing shadowruns that keeps you in nuyen. That's how you keep fed, and equipped.
But then, it's like the Fixer, Angel, says. "We're the ones without SIN. We can cast all the stones we want."
